Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a summer move for Sporting Lisbon winger Diego Capel, amid competition from Tottenham Hotspur and Marseille.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Portuguese side from Sevilla in 2011, has made 21 appearances for the club this season, scoring thrice. Brendan Rodgers is now keen on bringing the Spaniard to Anfield in the summer, according to the Daily Mirror, as the Northern Irishman looks to strengthen his attack ahead of next season.

Capel's sale could generate some much-needed funds for cash-strapped Lisbon, who recently agreed on a £8.5m deal that would see their striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel join Norwich City at the end of the season.

The report also claims Liverpool could face competition from Marseille in their pursuit of Capel, who is understood to be valued at around £10m. The Reds' Premier League rivals Tottenham were also linked with a move for the winger in recent weeks.

Capel, a Barcelona product, has been capped twice at international level for Spain.

Carragher Backs Wisdom and Kelly

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has tipped young defenders Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly to have a bright future at Liverpool.

The duo have enjoyed first-team football as the Reds' full-backs in recent seasons, earning rave reviews for the way they coped with the English top flight at such a young age. Carragher feels their future would be in the heart of the defence and is confident the pair could have a great future at Merseyside.

"You look at Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly particularly. It's mainly because they are young centre-backs who have gone into the team playing full-back to gain experience. It's very hard to go straight into any Premier League team and play in the middle immediately. But they've done very well over the last 12 to 18 months," Carragher said.

"I'm very confident that they could play centre-back for Liverpool once they have the experience. Being physically stronger and quicker, if they can learn the game they can maybe have a bigger impact at the club than myself," the veteran defender added.
