Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will have 24 hours to prove his fitness ahead of the crunch Premier League meeting with Chelsea as he continues to nurse a hamstring problem.

Sturridge missed the win at Norwich City with the injury and is a doubt for this weekend's game against his former club.

Having scored 20 league goals this season, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is ready to delay finalising his starting XI to give Sturridge every chance of proving his fitness.

"We will see," Rodgers said. "We'll give it another 24 hours. He's working hard with the medical team. So we shall see.

"But if he's not fit, we've coped before; we've managed before without a number of players. We'll go into the game with confidence. We'll assess that over the next 24 hours."

Upon the unveiling of plans for the redevelopment of Anfield, which will see the attendance increase to close to 60,000, managing director Ian Ayre denied Liverpool would be hamstrung in the transfer market similar to how Arsenal were forced to implement major cut backs after moving to the Emirates Stadium.

Having confirmed qualification for next year's Champions League with victory at Norwich, Liverpool will be bolstered by up to £40m from television and prize money from next season, but the financial incentives are tempered by the added fixture congestion.

And Rodgers says Liverpool will make the required moves in the summer transfer window in order to ensure they have the squad to fight on all fronts.

"We're going to need depth to our squad - there's no question about that," Rodgers added.

"And certainly, this summer Liverpool Football Club becomes a really exciting and attractive proposition for players.

"That's something that we'll continue to look at and continue to work on, to get those talents into the club to help grow and develop the squad. We've got targets; we know we need to improve - we're in the Champions League now, so we can say that."
