FINAL WHISTLE: Liverpool 1 1 MAN UTD Honours even then as Andre Mariner blows the final whistle. An odd game that didn't really come alive until the last half-hour. Liverpool will feel they did enough to snatch a win at the end but De Gea played magnificently. Javier Hernandez continued his excellent start to the season to maintain United's unbeaten start but Sir Alex Ferguson will feel his side were fortunate to grab a point after a lacklustre first-half.

89mins Jordan Henderson almost grabs the winner. Suarez lofts the ball to the England Under-21 captain who's looping effort is well-saved by De Gea. There's a scramble from the resulting corner but United hustle the ball free. The ball's then put back into the box and Henderson has a free header seven yards out but the midfielder skies the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy. What a chance.

88mins Suarez has played really well an isolated position up front and he wins a freekick 30 yards from goal. Gerrard takes but he fails to clear the first defender.

85mins Both sides are pressing for a winner now, there's a tense air around Anfield. United's attack is fresh, potent and proven and Liverpool are looking ragged at the back. Which is probably why they're keeping the ball up in United's half. Downing strikes the ball from almost 35 yards out, it's a good effort but it sails safely over De Gea's goal.

82mins Liverpool strike back immediately. Downing maraudes down the left and whips a wonderful cross into the six yard box where Kuyt stretches to connect, the ball's sailing in but somehow De Gea sticks out a palm and turns the ball round the post. From the resulting corner Adam almost wrong-foots De Gea but the United keeper parries the ball. Only as far as Kuyt though who gets the ball stuck under his feet from two yards out and Evans bustles the ball clear. Whew.

80mins GOAL!! LIVERPOOL 1 1 MAN UTD. United win a corner down the right, it's cleared behind and United win a second. The ball's whipped in, Welbeck flicks it on and Hernandez loses Kuyt to nod in from three yards out. Game on.

77mins United have had a whopping 72 per cent of possession since the Liverpool goal. Kenny Dalglish won't mind though, so long as Liverpool close this game out.

75mins Sir Alex Ferguson's gone all in now. Javier Hernandez comes on for Phil Jones who seems to be ok folowing that earlier knock. Nani turns in a central position but arrows his shot high over Reina's goal.

72mins Anfield is rocking now. Liverpool can sense United are there for the taking. It's a shame they can't string two passes together mind.

69mins Wayne Rooney and Nani on, Park and Young off. Replays of Ferdinand's challenge on Adam show the contact was minimal at best. The Liverpool man has earned that freekick but the United wall should have done better. Giggs peeled away at the last minute to leave a gaping hole in the right-hand side. De Gea had no chance with that, the United keeper was completely unsighted.

66mins Rio Ferdinand is a very very lucky man. Adam wins the ball just inside the United half and roams forward, he has Suarez to his left but the Scot goes it alone and Ferdinand sticks out a leg to bring him down. He's already been booked but the referee decides a freekick is sufficient punishment. Gerrard lines up the freekick and GOAL!!!!! Steven Gerrard arrows the ball through a gap in the wall, with De Gea left flat-footed. LIVERPOOL 1 0 MAN UTD.

63mins Suarez gets half a yard on Ferdinand to get a shot off but it's deflected wide for a corner. There's a slight delay as Suarez and Evra resume their spat from earlier on. Dirk Kuyt gets involved and the referee's going to have a word with all three of them. The corner falls to Adam wide right but the Scot can only put the ball out of play when well placed. Evra gives the ref an earful, presumably about the earlier Suarez-spat, and picks up a yellow card for his troubles.

60mins Gerrard looks to have dropped deeper with Henderson given license to move forward. Not much activity on the United bench, Nani's out warming up but no sign of Rooney yet.

57mins Jordan Henderson comes on for Lucas. A precautionary one from Dalglish with the Brazilian already on a yellow. Liverpool win a corner after Suarez tustles with Evra down the right. It's a fair battle, with both players giving as good as each other but Evra goes down like he's taken a bullet in the ankle and the Liverpool supporters react accordingly. United win a freekick out of the whole mess. Not sure how that happened to be honest. But there you go.

55mins A couple of forays into the United half end with De Gea saving comfortably. First, Suarez finds some space on the edge of the 18-yard line but his low shot is easily gathered by De Gea. Then Gerrard bursts down the left but his low cross is cut out by the United keeper with Suarez and Kuyt hovering.

53mins It's a hectic start to the second half. Re: Evan's handball. Seen them given but that would have been harsh. The ball hit the United defender's arm but he didn't know much about it. Ferdinand picks up a booking for an overenthusiastic challenge on Suarez. The resulting freekick comes to nothing.

50mins Liverpool win a freekick just inside the United half, the ball's lofted into the United box and Suarez holds off Smalling, twisting one way then t'other to win a corner. From the resulting delivery Kuyt's header appears to strike Evan's arm. Liverpool are convinced it's a penalty but the referee waves play on. United charge up the other end and win a corner after Young's shot is turned behind.

47mins Liverpool are yet to get started and United have started strongly. Lucas is lucky to escape a second yellow for obstruction on Young as the United winger looked to burst into the box. Reina blocks Young's effort but can't hold on and he's lucky the ball doesn't drop to the feet of the nearby Welbeck.

46min We're back underway, Jones is fit to continue at least for the moment. Liverpool kickoff and almost immediately lose the ball, Young loses Martin Kelly but shoots wide.

**HALFTIME**

45mins Phil Jones is struggling after that collision, it's not his head though, it's a knee injury that's got the United bench concerned. And that's the halftime whistle.

43mins Young picks up a booking for upending Gerrard down the right. Adam whips in the freekick but De Gea gets two fists to the ball and punches clear. We have a stoppage after Lucas and Jones clash heads. Ferguson muttering to the fourth official with Lucas already on a yellow. Purely accidental but that's unlikely to stop the United manager giving the officials his two cents on the matter.

40mins Park slides in on Enrigue and wins the ball down the right. He opts to go it alone but skews his shot wide of Reina's goal.

37mins The game's picked up in the last five minutes. United pile forward, Giggs and Welbeck exchange neat passes on the edge of the Liverpool area before the ball falls to Fletcher but the Scot drags a horrible shot wide. Ashley Young was wide open in the centre but Fletcher either didn't see him or fancied his chances.

34mins Excellent save by De Gea! The United defence back off Adam as he advances 20 yards from goal. He unleashes a low drive that's blocked by Evans. It falls to Suarez who jinks right, then left before unleashing a shot but he hits it straight at the United keeper. First real chance of the match.

30mins Liverpool win a corner after good work by Suarez down the left-hand channel. The Uruguyan finally gets the better of Ferdinand but his cross is put behind by the United defender. The corner comes to nothing, mind. The game's gone a bit flat. Not surprising as there's not a lot happening.

27mins Decent cross into the United area from Jose Enrique but Ferdinand heads clear. Park brings the ball clear and Lucas brings him down. Yellow card.

25mins Suarez has a shot from the halfway line. He misses. Unsurprisingly.

21mins Stewart Downing gets the crowd on their feet. A speculative shot from 25 yards deflects behind for a corner. Adam takes it short to Gerrard who whips in a delightful cross that Suarez and Kuyt just fail to get on the end of. Possibly because they were facing the wrong way. That's got the home support going again.

19mins A lull in the game after a frenetic start. Anfield quiet as United smuggle possession around midfield, Ferdinand keeping Suarez relatively quiet so far.

15mins Curse of the critic: Jones picks up the ball in midfield and fizzes a pass out wide where Evra beats his man and drifts a cross towards the far post where Jones has continued his run. But his header only finds the side-netting. United growing into this game now.

13mins A ridiculous dive by Stewart Downing has Patrice Evra all in a tiz, demanding a yellow card for the Liverpool man, referee's having none of it. Liverpool have been the better of the two sides in the opening quarter of an hour. United struggling to assert themselves in midfield where Phil Jones seems to be a little out of depth.

11mins But it comes to nothing. Gerrard floats a ball into the box but easily dealt with by Ferdinand.

10mins Apologies for the gap in updates, some technical issues this end. It's been a bright start from Liverpool who have begun with real confidence. As you would expect, some strong early challenges but Liverpool have a freekick 35 yards out...

1240 Right, the players are in the tunnel, the sun is out, we're five minutes away. Batten down the hatches.

Preamble: "I have always considered Manchester United versus Liverpool to be the game of the season in English football," said Sir Alex Ferguson Friday but with no Rooney, Hernandez or Nani was the old maestro merely indulging in a few mind games ahead of today's clash? The United team selection would certainly imply Ferguson has one eye on the mid-week trip to Otelul Galati and next weekend's clash against City but that doesn't take anything away from what is a bold statement.

Liverpool are no shrinking violets, especially at Anfield where they have won the last three matches between the two sides and with Luis Suarez in irrepresible form, Ferdinand and Evans will be busy this afternoon.

Man Utd starting XI: De Gea; Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Young, Jones, Fletcher, Park, Giggs; Welbeck. Subs: Lindegaard, Anderson, Rooney, Hernandez, Carrick, Nani, Valencia.

Liverpool starting XI: Reina; Kelly, Jose Enrique, Carragher, Skrtel; Lucas, Adam, Gerrard, Downing, Kuyt; Suarez. Subs: Doni, Agger, Carroll, Henderson, Spearing, Bellamy, Robinson.
