Unfortunately the old newspaper adage 'publish and be damned' is now a case of 'Tweet and I'll see you in court' for Sally Bercow, who has landed herself in hot water with Lord McAlpine. Who has issued her with a libel court order over her tweet, which implicated him,as an alleged paedophile whose name circulated on the internet in the Jimmy Savile sex scandal, with the words "Why is Lord McAlpine trending? *innocent face*"

She has refused to apologise for the tweet, which prompted McAlpine to ask £50,000 in damages and an apology from Bercow but an out-of-court settlement was not reached. Lawyers for McAlpine have previously said he would target 20 "high-profile tweeters" over the defamatory allegations, which were made on various social networks following a Newsnight report that incorrectly linked the ex-Tory party treasurer with child sex claims.

According to the Guardian, Bercow has now hired media law firm Carter-Ruck to defend her. The story is on going.
