Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed his interest in signing Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben.

Since the Netherlands team's World Cup campaign has come to an end, Van Gaal is now on his way to take over the reins at Old Trafford and begin a new era for the club. The Dutchman is keen to take United straight back to the top after a miserable 2013-14 campaign saw them finish seventh in the league.

Earlier in the summer, the Red Devils were linked with Robben after he starred in the Netherlands' demolition of defending champions Spain in their opening game of the World Cup. The United manager has now confirmed his interest in bringing his compatriot to Old Trafford and has issued an open welcome to the player.

'He is always welcome. But he knows this himself,' Van Gaal said, as quoted in the Daily Mail.

However, the Dutch winger has revealed that he turned down his national team boss and opted to continue his stay with the Bavarian giants.

The 30-year-old winger, who has been in blistering form in the World Cup was approached by Van Gaal after their 3-0 victory over Brazil to capture third place. However, the former Chelsea player has insisted that he is happy at Bayern and is not thinking of a transfer at this point.

"After the match he asked me to come to Manchester, I'm very happy with where I am now. I told [Van Gaal] that," Robben said, as quoted in the Daily Mail.

'Van Gaal is the best coach I've had. We've got a very special relationship, but I will not make a transfer. I'm at the right place at Bayern so that has nothing to do with Van Gaal or United."

The Red Devils manager has been very keen to bring Robben to United and re-create the deadly partnership with fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie. But it seems like that wish is unlikely to be fulfilled any time soon as the Holland international only recently signed a new contract with the Bundesliga champions.
