A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck 62 miles (100km) south-west of Suchiate in southern Mexico, the US Geographical Survey (USGS) reported. It struck at a depth of 10km, according to the USGS.

There are frequent earthquakes in Mexico, one of the most seismically active regions in the world. In July, 2014, five people were killed by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck near Tapachula in southern Mexico and in neighbouring Guatemala.
