Toni Kroos
Toni Kroos is still very much sought-after despite United dropping out of the race to sign him

Manchester United have ended their interest in Chelsea target Tony Kroos following the expected signing of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, reports in Spain claim.

The Premier League giants have been monitoring the Bayern Munich star for a while with former manager David Moyes reportedly trying to secure his services during the January transfer window.

After Louis van Gaal's appointment it looks like United will renew their efforts to sign Kroos this summer, as the midfielder flourished under his guidance during his spell as Bayern coach.

However, United have reportedly finally opted to make a move for Herrera instead by meeting his £29m release clause and according to Spanish newspaper AS are no longer keen on Kroos.

Even though United is yet to announce Herrera's signing, reports in Spain claim the deal is already done as the midfielder has already agreed personal terms and undergone a medical with his new club.

AS says that Herrera already flew to England on Tuesday after farewells to his Bilbao team-mates and expects to complete the move before the end of the week.

But even with United out of the race for Kroos, Chelsea will have to fight hard to secure the Bayern Munich star as both Real Madrid and Barcelona also want to tempt Kroos to La Liga.

The German international has only one year left on his contract at the Allianz Arena and after rejecting an offer to commit his future to Bayern he could be available for around £20m, a bargain for a player considered one of the world's best players in his position.

AS reports Chelsea are trying to persuade him by offering a €8.5m-a-year salary while Los Blancos will not go over €6m.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have also joined the race and are trying to capitalise on their strong relationship with Bayern officials following the sale of Thiago Acantara to the Bundesliga club.
