Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dropped the biggest hint yet suggesting David de Gea has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.

De Gea's current contract at Old Trafford expires this summer and despite United's efforts to get him to extend his stay, talks are yet to reach a positive conclusion for the Premier League side.

The Spain international was forced off with a hip injury in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday 17 May, prompting suggestions he may have already played his last game for the club,

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, van Gaal said: "With every transfer it is also a process. It is also a process with David de Gea, but he shall not leave us so easily because we are a great club and he wants to participate. But of course he is Spanish and his girlfriend is Spanish. But he shall not leave easily."

De Gea, who has played an instrumental role in the club's return to the top four, was untested during United's final home game of the season but was unable to continue after injury struck in the 74th minute.

The ex-Atletico Madrid starlet went immediately down the tunnel with United's physio to receive treatment, paving the way for Victor Valdes to make his debut for the club.

De Gea emerged from the dressing room after the match as United and Louis van Gaal held a lap of honour around Old Trafford to thank fans for their support.

Ander Herrera put his side ahead after 30 minutes with a precise volley from Ashley Young's cross. United maintained the momentum early in the second half but De Gea's injury and the introduction of Tyler Blackett at left back for Marcos Rojo saw the home side lose their rhythm.

Another substitute in Theo Walcott took full advantage and forced an equaliser when his cross deflected off the outstretched leg of Rojo and over Valdes into the back of the net.
