Manchester United are considering a move in signing Fiorentina defender Stefan Savic, according to the Spanish newspaper AS.

The 24-year-old spent the 2011/12 season at Manchester City before leaving them and completing a move to Fiorentina after one season in the Premier League. Since joining the Italian outfit, he has been a regular inclusion as he made 29 league appearances last term.

The Montenegrin's form for Fiorentina has attracted interest from Spain and England. After losing Toby Alderweireld to Tottenham Hotspur - who spent the last season on-loan at Southampton – Atletico Madrid are looking to bring in a centre-back this summer.

The La Liga giants have set their sights on Savic and already started negotiations with Fiorentina. He is Diego Simeone's first choice player in the centre-back position for the next season.

However, Atletico will face competition as AS reports Louis van Gaal's side have now joined the race for the former City defender. United's move can block any move for Savic to Vicente Calderon.

Fiorentina value their player at around €15m (£10.5m, $16.4m), which is something Atletico are unwilling to meet. To sweeten the deal, the Spanish capital club are willing to offer their midfielder Mario Suarez as part of the deal.

Suarez has already expressed his desire to leave his current employers. The midfielder's high wage demands has forced the Serie A side to reject Atletico's offer, which leaves United to make an approach for Savic.

AS claims Fiorentina leaked the information regarding United's interest in Savic, which will then allow them to get a better price for the centre-half. It is not the first time, United are interested in signing him.

Last summer, Louis van Gaal was keen on bringing the defender to Old Trafford. Savic's agent Zarko Pelicic has in June 2014 said that his client was pleased with the interest from United and Tottenham.
