Hinteregger says United are interested in his services.

Manchester United are interested in signing Red Bull Salzburg defender Martin Hinteregger, according to the 21 year old.

Hinteregger is reportedly being courted by Arsenal, Liverpool and Juventus after impressing last season as Salzburg finished second in the Austrian Bundesliga.

But the emerging defender says Premier League champions United are in pursuit of his services as well as an unnamed Serie A side.

"I confirm, there is interest in me from Manchester United and a top Italian club," he is quoted as saying on TuttoJuve.com.

"I am honoured, I honestly did not expect that. Actually my goal is to stay here, but in any case I will talk to my agent and consider whether a transfer might be beneficial."

With captain Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand's current deals expiring at the end of the season, manager David Moyes is likely to enter the transfer market with the intention of signing a replacement defender.

Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have a littered injury record and Moyes may seek a new face to lead a new era at Old Trafford.

Vidic has spent the last two years nursing knee injuries while Ferdinand has a long-standing back problem which restricts his involvement to Premier League games.

Neither have been offered a new deal as they enter the final 12 months of their contracts but with Paul Scholes having departed last summer and Ryan Giggs expected to move permanently into a coaching role at the end of the campaign, Moyes could move both experienced campaigners out of Old Trafford.

In West Bromwich Albion's win at Old Trafford on Saturday, Ferdinand was at fault as Morgan Amalfitano opened the scoring for the Baggies, who secure their first win at United for 35 years.

Last week, United were linked with a January transfer window move for FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala as Moyes attempts to make up for a summer where he failed to secure a number of the club's primary transfer targets.

Bids for Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera and Gareth Bale were all rebuffed leading United to sign Marouane Fellaini on deadline day.
