It is 75 years since two brothers by the surname McDonald opened up their first fast-food joint in San Bernadino, California, on 15 May 1940.

Richard and Maurice McDonald started out selling hot dogs, fries and milkshakes from their store. By the early 1950s, they were franchising their fast-food concept.

After teaming up with milkshake machine salesman Ray Kroc, who understood the enormous potential of the brothers' business model, the McDonald's Corporation as we know it today was founded in April 1955 – and the rest, as they say, is history.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the opening of the first ever McDonald's restaurant, here some facts about the company today.
