An off-duty Merseyside Police officer has died from injuries he sustained in an early morning assault Reuters

Merseyside police has named the man killed in a Liverpool city centre assault this morning as 36-year-old off-duty officer Neil Doyle.

Doyle, 36, who worked from Eaton Road police station, died as a result of his injuries following the incident in Colquitt Street at about 3.15 am.

Two other men, who were with the victim and were also assaulted, have been taken to hospital where they are being treated for facial injuries.

Forensics are at the scene examining potential evidence.

A police spokesman said: "The investigation is still in its very early stages and officers are trying to establish what happened.

"The three victims were taken to hospital, where the 36-year-old man died a short while later."
