Federal police in Mexico have rearrested cartel drug lord Rubén Oseguera González, more commonly known as El Menchito, rumoured number two in the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Officials told Televisa news channel González was arrested in Jalisco state and his case had been transferred to the office of the Deputy Attorney for Organised Crime in Mexico City.

González is alleged to have run the finances of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, second only to his father Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "the Mencho".

Jalisco New Generation Cartel rose to prominence in Mexico in 2011 and has been considered at various points in the nation's shifting drug war its most powerful cartel.

At one point the Jalisco cartel was able to finance three territorial wars across Mexico with the proceeds of its drug trafficking and extortion operations.

In Michocan it rivalled the long-standing Templar cartel, in Veracruz the Matazetas and it has a long-running feud with the Zetas, a second cartel to lay claim to the title of Mexico's largest and most feared criminal organisation.

González was first arrested by law enforcement in 2014 but was later released under dubious circumstances. It is claimed by Televisa news that his father organised González's release in exchange for his own surrender but then reneged on the deal.
