David Moyes
Glazers remain confident in Moyes but faith will be tested over next 12 games.

Manchester United manager David Moyes will be given until the end of the season to prove to the Glazer family he can be trusted to oversee the club's £200m squad overhaul this summer, reports suggest.

A 2-0 defeat to Olympiakos on Tuesday evening darkened the mood around the club and provided another telling illustration of how far the Premier League champions have fallen this season as Moyes' future at Old Trafford came under further scrutiny.

After the performance that was widely condemned as United's worst in Europe in recent memory, discontent among supporters grew immeasurably, a mood yet to be reflected by those in control at the club.

A wide number of reports suggest the Glazers have no intention of parting ways with the Scot and remain fully confident he will be capable of overseeing the extensive squad surgery required at the end of the season.

However, the Independent suggest that faith will be tested between now and the end of the season. United are 23 points off the tally they amassed at this stage of last season and are on the brink of a Champions League exit after a defeat to the side widely recognised as the worst to qualify for the knock out stages of the tournament. Elimination from both the FA Cup and Capital One Cup has also worked to undermine Moyes' first season in charge.

Such a drastic downturn in performances despite the £37m addition of Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie's return from injury was not anticipated by the Glazer family. The Independent believe that while the powers at be at United are confident in Moyes' ability to turn things around, a dismal final third of the season could leave his position untenable.

With 12 games of their season remaining, Moyes has the task of reviving the expectation of both the fans and the board. United welcome both Liverpool and Manchester City to Old Trafford either side of their return leg against Olymipakos in a pivotal nine day period next month with defeat to the club's biggest rivals not an option for the under pressure manager.

Away trips to Everton and Newcastle - who both claimed victories at Old Trafford earlier in the season – follow and present further potential stumbling blocks in a pivotal 10 week period for the club and Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

Significant investment is expected at the club this summer to restore the club's aims of challenging for the Premier League crown. Nemanja Vidic will lead an exodus that is likely to feature Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and possibly Patrice Evra with the future of many under-performing squad players uncertain.

Luke Shaw, Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal and Eliaquim Mangala are some of names the club have been linked with ahead of a summer that is expected to dwarf anything the club has seen before in spending.
