Every sportsperson shares the dream of winning an Olympic medal. For the spectators, it remains a breathtaking memory. In 2012, Londoners and people all over the UK will get the chance to be a part of this mega event as 1,000 cities and villages will witness the Olympic Flame travel an estimated 8,000 miles journey between May 18 and July 27 next year.

The London 2012 Organising Committee revealed the route of the Olympic Torch Relay Monday. During the 70-day period, the Olympic Flame will tour 1,018 destinations with more than 95 per cent of the population within 10 miles of the Olympic Flame.

The Olympic Flame, which is set to arrive in the UK from Greece on May 18, will begin the Torch Relay at Land's End, Cornwall, on May 19. With as many as 8,000 torchbearers, the Flame will visit landmarks including Loch Ness, Snowdon, Stormont and Stonehenge. The Olympic Flame will travel around every country and borough of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. At the end of every day, a festival will be held in the honour of a different city. On the final day of its journey, the Olympic Flame will come to the Olympic Stadium on July 27, 2012, to inaugurate the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The organizers would be introducing different modes of transport for the Olympic Flame including horseback, bicycle, tram and steam-train.

"I'm delighted that the Olympic Torch Relay will take the 2012 Games to almost every corner of the UK and that we have achieved our ambition to take the Flame to within an hour's journey of 95 per cent of the population," said Seb Coe, LOCOG chairperson.

"Now everyone is invited to plan their welcome and find out where they can go to be part of this historic occasion. The Olympic Games are coming to you as the Olympic Flame gives our people and places their moment to shine," he added.

Meanwhile, the organizers said the street-by-street detail of the route will be confirmed next year.
