Oscar Pistorius Bail Hearing to Enter Third Day

South African Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius's bail hearing over the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is set to enter the third day.

During the second day of the hearing, Pistorius's defence appeared to have secured an edge over the prosecutors, opine those who were present in the courtroom.

Pistorius faces premeditated murder charge, a "Schedule Six" offence as per South African law. Under the current charge, bail will be granted in "exceptional circumstances," for the accused. Pistorius denies the charge and argues he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.

Detective Hilton Botha, who was the first to arrive at the crime scene, was cross-examined by Pistorius's lawyer Barry Roux forcing Botha to modify crucial details.

At one point, Botha, who earlier testified against bail for Pistorius, went on to concede that the double amputee's version of the events could also be correct. The detective said: "The applicant's version is consistent with the evidence."

Despite this, the prosecutors are confident on the case.

"It is normal for the cross-examination to happen like that. We believe that he [Botha] is strong enough to stand that [examination]. The bail application is still on, but as the state we remain confident that we will get what we want. Until tomorrow [when the bail hearing resumes], the status quo remains the same," National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Medupi Simasiku told reporters soon after the second day of hearing.

A statement released by Pistorius's family said that they "trust that everyone has more clarity on this very tragic event," adding that "the contradictions in Botha's testimony [are] extremely concerning."

Meanwhile, inside the jail, Pistorius "only started to eat tonight," his uncle Arnold Pistorius told eNews Channel Africa.

He said: "Carl and Aimee [Pistorius's brother and sister] tell me they sit with him and he spends a lot of time reading, especially reading the Bible, as his mother taught him."

Pistoruis will be spending months in jail before the actual murder trial begins if he is denied bail.
