A Hofstra University student was accidentally killed by a police officer when an intruder pointed a gun at her head during a break-in at an off-campus home.

Nassau County police said 21-year old Andrea Rebello was killed after being shot in the head by police when they responded to a home invasion early Friday morning (May 17).

Authorities say Dalton Smith broke into the home looking for valuables and held a gun to Rebello's head when police arrived on the scene.

Reports say an officer fired eight shots at Smith after he pointed his weapon at the officer. The officer hit Smith seven times, killing him and another shot hit Rebello in the head killing her.
