A legislation in America could mean pet owners would be considered guardians.

A new survey has revealed that if you own a pug, you are likely to be rich and happily married, with an average salary of £85,000, while Great Dane owners tended to be the lowest-paid, with an average salary of £35,000.

Those who own Dalmatians are said to spoil them more than any other dog, spending £17 a week on toys and treats.

According to the study was conducted by Frontline Spot On, a flea and tick prevention service for pets, owning a Yorkshire terrier is likely to mean you are the happiest out of all other dog owners while having a Labrador means it's likely that you are single.

The survey of 2,000 dog owners also shows that the most educated respondents own a golden retriever, as nearly a quarter of those surveyed hold a Masters degree or PhD.

Meanwhile the owner of a Dalmatian is likely to be have a sports car and dedicates most of their time on money.

"For many of the nation's dog owners, their dog is more than just a pet but a real part of the family too," said Christine Male, marketing manager for Frontline Spot On.

"It's interesting to note how our choice of dog can help define what sort of person we are."
