Overview

Defending champion, Nadal raced into the third round his favourite hunting ground by beating Dominic Thiem on Thursday. The 20-year-old Austrian was no match for the eight-time French Open champion as the Spaniard achieved a straight set victory in 125 minutes with the scores, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

Meanwhile, 65th ranked Mayer emerged triumphant over Teymuraz Gabashvili in what was the first meeting of their careers. The 27-year-old Argentinean won the first set, 6-2, but his 29-year-old opponent drew level by claiming the second set, 6-4.
However, the match eventually ended in Mayer's favour as he ousted his Russian counterpart, 6-4, 6-4, in the subsequent sets.

Nadal holds a staggering win-loss record of 61-1 in Paris with his only shock defeat coming in the fourth round against the runner-up Robin Soderling in 2009. However, the Spaniard remains the favourite to become the first player to be crown champion in Paris for the fifth time in a row.

The winner of this game will face the winner between Jack Sock and Dusan Lajovic in the pre-quarterfinals.

Head-to-Head

Nadal holds a 2-0 lead against Mayer in overall meetings. The pair have never clashed in a Grand Slam event.
