Rain stops play, words you often hear in cricket, rather than our other national pastime, but yesterday were heard after the match between England and Poland was called off due to a torrential downpour in Warsaw.

Referees went onto the pitch to find that the ball could barely move at all on the waterlogged field. Attempts to cover the stadium with the roof proved futile due to the windy conditions and the apparent fact that 24 hours' notice is needed before hand.

The postponement of the match is all a little embarrassing for the Polish football association, seeing as a great deal of money has been spent on venues and facilities so that they could host the European Championship this summer.

The England has now been rescheduled for 4pm today, and thankfully the roof is now in place.

The other world cup qualifiers did go ahead last night, and there was mixed news for the home nations. Wales lost 2-0 to Croatia and Scotland lost by the same margin to Belgium. Northern Ireland meanwhile managed a great 1-1 draw away against Portugal.

The result of the night was undoubtedly Sweden's resounding comeback from 4-0 down to draw their match with Germany 4-4.
