Manchester By The Sea
Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck are both nominated for their roles in drama Manchester By The Sea Roadside Attractions / Amazon Studios

The nominations for the 2017 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards have been announced, which means award season is well and truly upon us. It was up to Sophia Bush, Common and SAG President Gabrielle Cateris to share the actors and titles that made the cut at a press conference in West Hollywood on 14 December.

The annual event recognises outstanding talent across the previous 12 months in both film and TV. Winners are voted on by more than 110,000 members of the SAG-AFTRA union and have traditionally served as a helpful indicator of predicting Oscar acting nominees.

Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester By The Sea leads the way with four nominations, including a best actor nod for lead Casey Affleck and the same in the supporting actor category for 19-year-old newcomer Lucas Hedges. The entire cast also received a nod in the outstanding ensemble category as did the actors in Barry Jenkins' coming-of-age drama Moonlight, which bagged three noms across the board.

Surprisingly, Damian Chazelle's acclaimed musical La La Land missed out on being included in the best ensemble category but that's arguably down to the fact that the film is mostly carried by its two leads, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, both of whom received lead actor nods. Much like the Golden Globes, which announced its nominees earlier this week, Martin Scorsese's acclaimed drama Silence and Clint Eastwood's biopic Sully were snubbed entirely.

In terms of television, Netflix's The Crown and HBO's Westworld loomed large, each picking up nods for individual cast members as well as an ensemble nomination too. Award season favourites such as Modern Family, Game Of Thrones, House Of Cards, Veep, Orange Is The New Black and Black-ish also earned nominations across multiple categories.

Back in August, it was announced that Grace And Frankie star Lily Tomlin was to receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. The future winners will receive their trophies on Sunday 29 January with the ceremony airing live on TNT and TBS at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.
