Overview

Defending champion Serena Williams came through unscathed in the semi-finals against Kiki Bertens, finally ending the Dutchwoman's dream run at Roland Garros. The first set went into a tie break, which the world number one captured 9-7 in the break but the second set was more straight forward after a break of serve gave the American a 7-6, 6-4 win to make it to the finals for the second consecutive year.

Williams will capture her 22nd Grand Slam title with a win on Saturday, which will take her level with the great Steffi Graf. But the American will be wary of Muguruza, who inflicted her worst Grand Slam defeat when they last met at the French Open in 2014.

Muguruza, on the hand, will be eyeing revenge when she takes on Williams in the finals, as their last meeting was at the finals of Wimbledon in 2015, which the American won in straight sets. The world number four became the first Spanish woman to reach the finals at Roland Garros since Conchita Martinez in 2000. She will be keen to capture her first slam title in her second appearance following her loss in SW19 last year.

History beckons for both players at Saturday's final, we will either see the emergence of a new face in women's tennis, or we will see a one of the greatest in the women's game take her place alongside another women's tennis legend.
