The world's largest democracy has handed the Bharatiya Janata Party a thumping victory in the electoral battle.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won 339 parliamentary seats while the Hindu nationalist party won the world's biggest election gaining a simple majority with 283 seats.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister-in-waiting is considered the main architect behind the historical success of his party.

But he has faced severe criticism for his handling of riots in his state of Gujarat. There were rumours that Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan had threatened to leave the country if Modi came to power.

After the results on Friday showed Modi as the clear winner, Modi fans tweeted asking the Bollywood actor about his plans of leaving India.

However, the Varanasi wing of the BJP came forward with a tweet saying the news was baseless and Khan had not said anything against Modi or the BJP.

Meanwhile, another actor, Kamal R Khan, who had threatened to leave India after Modi's win, has tweeted that he is leaving the country forever.
