The killer fan-pleasing shot of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer LucasFilm

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the biggest trailer of the year, having topped 40 million views in just three days.

At the time of writing the two most popular uploads of the trailer of YouTube, those of MovieClips Trailers and the official Star Wars account, have accumulated over 43 million views – and that's before accounting for other versions of the trailer.

Earlier this year the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer topped 36.4 million views in four days according to The Hollywood Reporter, while Avengers: Age of Ultron gathered 50.6 million in five days.

Last week the other major movie trailer for 2014 – that of Jurassic Park sequel Jurassic World – was also released, drawing 38 million views in the five days since it was released.

The huge success of each of the aforementioned trailers just goes to show what an enormous year for films 2015 is going to be.

Of course the return of Star Wars a decade after George Lucas' prequel trilogy came to a close is the biggest film of the year in terms of anticipation and box office potential, so it's no surprise that it's first trailer is the biggest of the 2014.
