Overview

The Black Cats enter this game after losing the last league fixture 3-4 to Chelsea at home. Jozy Altidore gave Gus Poyet's side an early lead before England international Frank Lampard equalised three minutes later. Eden Hazard extended the Blues' lead before the break.

Sunderland made a comeback in the second half as John O'Shea equalised. Hazard struck once again before Phillip Bardsley's own goal in the final minutes gave Chelsea a two-goal lead. Bardsley scored for the Black Cats two minutes later, but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

Meanwhile, Andre Villas-Boas watched his side come from a goal down in the second half to register a 2-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. Ashkan Dejagah scored for the Cottagers early in the second half before summer-signing Vlad Chiriches equalised for Spurs.

Lewis Holtby scored the winner for Spurs in the final 10 minutes to end his team's winless run. The White Hart Lane outfit are sixth in the league table with 24 points from 14 games while Sunderland are bottom of the table with eight points.

What the Managers Say

Gus Poyet: "In the last year and a half, Tottenham in some games did not play very well and they won because Gareth [Bale] came up with something unique. Now it's a totally different situation. Spurs have got plenty of options, plenty of new players who need to adapt to football here and to the way they play."

Andre Villas-Boas: "This is a tough game but one good thing is that Sunderland will try to play. That has always been Gus's style, not just of his teams, but how he was as a player. They won against Manchester City, gave Chelsea a hard fight, so we expect it to be difficult. Ideally, if we can get something out of there, particularly a win, it would be a massive boost."
