Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on agreeing a fee with Atletico Madrid signing their defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the Telegraph.

The 26-year-old spent the last season on-loan at Southampton, making 26 starts for Ronald Koeman's side. After an impressive form with the South Coast club, he is attracting interest from the Premier League clubs.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is interested in signing the Belgium international. Alderweireld admitted that he is aware that the former Real Madrid manager is monitoring him.

The Mirror claims that the Premier League champions were willing to include Filipe Luis as a part of the swap deal in their bid to sign Alderweireld from Ateltico. The Blues signed the Brazilian from the Spanish capital club in 2014 and since making a switch to Stamford Bridge, he has struggled to hold down a place in the starting XI.

Alderweireld, who can play as a right-back and centre-back has already expressed his desire to continue in England. Chelsea have now cooled their interest in the versatile defender, while Luis' future at the west London club is still uncertain.

Tottenham have taken advantage of the situation and have already made an approach to secure his services. Mauricio Pochettino wants to make the Belgian his third signing of the summer transfer window.

Alderweireld got married on 19 June and is currently on a honeymoon in Bali. His future is set to be sorted once he returns, with White Hart Lane set to be his likely destination.

Meanwhile, the Saints also want to sign Alderweireld on a permanent transfer. However, Tottenham have managed to beat Southampton as they edge closer to sealing the deal for the defender, who is set to be their third signing of this summer.

The north London club have already signed central defender Kevin Wimmer from FC Koln and right-back Kieran Trippier from Burnely. Alderweireld will become the Argentine manager's third acquisition as he looks to bolster his side's defence for the next season.
