A man has been arrested in Northeast Portland, Oregon for stabbing a woman's car while dressed in chain mail, a battle helmet and carrying a sword and staff, according to Oregon TV station KPTV.

Konrad Bass, 30, ran towards the woman's red BMW in the middle of a traffic intersection on 13 May, stabbing the car several times. The woman called the police and said that a "pirate" was attacking her.

Bass disagreed, telling the police that he was a "high elf engaged in battle with the evil Morgoth".

The dark lord Morgoth is a character from fantasy writer JRR Tolkien's The Silmarillion, a prequel book describing the universe of Eä, in which The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are set.

Bass admitted that he had taken LSD before the attack.

Portland police handcuffed Bass and then transported him to a local hospital for medical treatment.

He now faces charges of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and menacing, but has not been booked into jail.
