Valeria Lukyanova, a 20-something Internet personality grabbed headlines worldwide after unveiling herself as a real life Barbie doll.

The illusion was eerily similar and she soon had a global following and a near-iconic status in contemporary culture. Of course, there was a healthy community of critics too, who claimed she was both living in a fantasy world and setting a bad example; the fact Lukyanova posed in extremely seductive poses and clothing for V Magazine late last year probably did not help her cause.

However, we could now be offered what could be interesting insights into the real life Barbie's mind, with a new documentary starring Lukyanova herself. Vice.com's Will Fairman travelled to Ukraine to spend time with and shoot a documentary on the real life Barbie.

A note on the website says: "What most of the world doesn't know is that Valeria is not a real girl at all, but a time-travelling spiritual guru whose purpose is to save the world from the clutches of superficiality and negative energy."

"I'd seen her like everyone else when she popped up on the internet with all those bewildering and bizarre images and videos," Fairman told the Mail Online, "And thought there had to be something more behind it all, because I could see little flecks of esoteric stuff. I followed it up and discovered she was a new age opera composer and gave seminars on spirituality, so she obviously had a few more strings to her bow than just being a tumblr girl."

The film deals largely with Lukyanova's perception of herself, the way she sees the world and the way the world responds to her.

"I come from a place where only love and joy exist. But I noticed the media is only interested in negativity: show someone in a bad light, show someone's mistakes... at some point... I constantly received their negative reactions and enjoyed it. Specifically for them I created posts that would make them angry. But people who think badly of me just aren't happy in their own lives," she says.

Finally, part of the film also deals with Lukyanova's certainty that she is an alien; she believes, with seemingly unshakeable conviction, she is from Venus. According to Fairman, she believes that "100%".

"I asked myself if everything was alright with my head. I hear voices all the time and see different beings. One day I decided to visit a psychiatrist. He listened carefully and said with another doctor I would have been taken to a special place. He said, 'I can see you are psychic'," Lukyanova explains.
