Mateo Musacchio
Mussacchio is ready to make a dramatic U-turn.

Tottenham Hotspur look set to miss out on concluding a deal for Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio after the La Liga club indicated the Argentina international is set to remain at the club.

Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for the 23 year old to help solve their defensive problems under Mauricio Pochettino, who has already made four additions this summer.

However, despite Villarreal seemingly signing a replacement in the form of Victor Ruiz on loan from Valencia, manager Garcia Toral has indicated Tottenham will be prevented from signing the youngster.

"We expect a definitive solution for this week," said Toral. "I believe that Musacchio will stay with us but I cannot confirm this 100 per cent."

Michel Vorm, Ben Davies, DeAndre Yedlin and Eric Dier – who scored the opening day winner against West Ham United – have already joined Tottenham this summer but Pochettino has been quoted claiming he wants to improve on his squad during the last two weeks of the transfer window.

Chairman Daniel Levy had been keen on limiting Tottenham's activity this summer however is struggling to prevent Pochettino targeting further names, with Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin heavily linked with a move to White Hart Lane.

"It (new signings) is not my concern," said Pochettino. "I think we have an unbelievable squad.

"Last season the club made a big investment and they signed unbelievable players. The most important thing is to develop our players and to provide the best team to play on the pitch."

To offset the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, Tottenham signed seven new players and broke their transfer record three times last summer but failed to build a genuine challenge to qualify for the Champions League under Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood.

Though Pochettino has concentrated on improving his back four, the club are short of forwards having not yet replaced Jermain Defoe, with the onus on Harry Kane, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado for goals.
