Bombay Velvet is based on historian Gyan Prakash's book 'Mumbai Fables' and narrates the story of how Bombay (now Mumbai) became a metropolis against the backdrop of love, greed, violence and jazz music. The film is set in the 1960s.

Two versions of the movie are planned for release...one for the Indian viewers and the other, for an international audience. The editing for the international version is by Oscar-winner Thelma Schoonmaker, who has been a frequent collaborator of director Martin Scorsese, and edited films like The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island and The Departed.

The Indian version is simultaneously being edited by Prerna Saigal, who was an associate director and editor for the Indian film, The Lunchbox.

Apart from Ranbir Kapoor, Bombay Velvet stars NH10 actress Anushka Sharma. The film also marks the debut of director Karan Johar, who will be seen in a negative role as a media mogul. This period drama is directed by Anurag Kashyap (Black Friday, Dev D).

Bombay Velvet is slated for release on 15 May.
