Arsene Wenger plans to add to the Arsenal squad in January and is closely monitoring the progress of Schalke teen sensation Max Meyer and is considering making an offer for Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Morata.

Despite a wonderful start to the season that sees them topping the Premier League and on the verge of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League, Wenger still feels the need to add more depth to his squad.

The Daily Mail reports that Morata has emerged as a genuine target and Wenger has already made an enquiry about the striker's availability as he seeks to secure back-up for Olivier Giroud.

Madrid are unlikely to part on a permanent basis with the 21-year-old as he has already made nine league appearances and scored two goals, but Arsenal are seeking to find out whether the Spanish giants would consider loaning him for the remainder of the season.

The Gunners are lacking options when it comes to out-and-out strikers as Nicklas Bendtner continues to be linked with an exit in January, while Yaya Sanogo is still learning his trade and not considered ready for first team action.

This has seemingly led to Wenger enquiring about securing the services of Morata on a short-term loan in January, though there is likely to be competition for his signature as Tottenham are also interested in the young striker.

However, it appears as though Morata is not the only player on Wenger's radar as the long-serving Arsenal boss is also tracking Schalke's talented midfielder Meyer.

The 18-year-old is viewed as one of the best prospects in the Bundesliga and has already fired three league goals for Schalke this season.

The German club will be desperate to keep hold of one of their brightest talents but may face a tough task in convincing him to remain at the club as they sit down in sixth place in the league, and are facing the prospect of being knocked out of the Champions League as they sit third in their group with one game remaining.

Meyer has already been linked with Chelsea after impressing against them in European competition but now it seems Arsenal have also entered the race and may well bid to bring him to the Emirates.
