Tony Hawk, the most famous skateboarder in the world, has been forced to issue a strong denial regarding false claims that he was married on Jeffrey Epstein's private island. The 57-year-old sports icon took to social media to shut down the speculation, which appears to have started after internet users misunderstood a name found in photo credits related to one of his past weddings.

The Source of the Confusion

The rumours began circulating after the release of new documents, often referred to as the 'Epstein files'. These documents have sparked a wave of online detectives trying to link celebrities to the disgraced financier, Jeffrey Epstein. In this case, people noticed that photos from Tony Hawk's 2006 wedding were credited to a man named Mark Epstein.

Jeffrey Epstein had a younger brother named Mark, which led many online users to jump to the conclusion that the skateboarder was associated with the family. However, Hawk clarified that this is a case of mistaken identity. The Mark Epstein who took his wedding photos is a well-known action sports photographer from Wyoming, not the brother of the convicted sex offender.

Hawk addressed this directly on Instagram, stating that the photographer is 'an accomplished action sports photographer from Wyoming and of no relation to Jeffrey Epstein'. He added firmly that he had never met Jeffrey Epstein and had never visited his island.

Setting the Record Straight on Nuptials

In his statement, Hawk expressed frustration with the 'narrative of nonsense' being spread about him. To prove the rumours wrong, he provided a detailed timeline of his four marriages, listing the exact location of each ceremony to show that none of them took place in the US Virgin Islands, where Epstein's private estate, Little St. James, was located.

Hawk listed his first marriage to Cindy Dunbar in 1990, which took place at a home in Fallbrook, California. His second marriage to Erin Lee in 1996 was held at a Hilton Hotel in San Diego, California.

The wedding that caused the confusion was his third, to Lhotse Merriam in 2006. Hawk explained that this ceremony took place in Fiji, specifically on Tavarua Surf Island. While it was on an island, Tavarua is a world-famous resort destination for surfers, known for its heart shape and luxury waves, and is completely unconnected to Jeffrey Epstein.

Finally, he noted that his current marriage to Catherine 'Cathy' Goodman in 2015 took place at Adare Manor in Ireland.

The Danger of Misinformation

Tony Hawk's experience highlights a growing problem with how information spreads on the internet. Since the release of various court documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, social media has been flooded with unverified lists and theories. Innocent people often get caught in the crossfire simply because they share a name with someone else or have visited a similar location.

In his post, which was written entirely in capital letters to show his seriousness, Hawk emphasised that facts matter. 'This is all easily verifiable information. Facts are not fungible,' he wrote. The word 'fungible' means something that can be replaced or changed. By saying facts are not fungible, Hawk means that the truth cannot be swapped out for a more exciting or scandalous lie.

He also took the time to apologise to the photographer, Mark Epstein, for the 'misinformation vortex' that has likely caused him stress.

A Legacy of Action Sports

Tony Hawk is widely considered the pioneer of modern vertical skateboarding. Throughout his decades-long career, Hawk has maintained a positive reputation as an ambassador for the sport. He runs the Tony Hawk Foundation (now known as The Skatepark Project), which builds skateparks in underprivileged communities.

The sudden association with a criminal scandal was clearly a shock to the athlete. By releasing the specific locations and dates of his weddings, he hopes to end the speculation immediately. The incident serves as a reminder to the public to check sources and verify details before believing viral claims on social media.
