Liverpool are planning a move for Konstantinos Mitroglou in January, according to the Mirror, as Brendan Rodgers looks to shore up his attacking options.

The Reds were found out in their league loss to league leaders Arsenal and Rodgers knows that should they aspire to finish in the top four, they need to strengthen in certain areas. Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea who are ahead on goal difference. The former Swansea manager has stressed the importance to spend this summer, and is in dire need of some fresh legs in midfield, which was easily bypassed by the Gunners last weekend.

Rodgers is not looking to sit on his haunches in attack either, with Mitroglou being looked into as replacement for Fabio Borini who is currently on loan at Sunderland and unlikely to extend his stay next summer. The Greek striker is expected to be available for a fee in the range of £6m, a bargain given the form he is in for Olympiacos. The manager is looking for players with the same potential as Philippe Countinho and Daniel Sturridge who have been major additions to the squad in the previous transfer windows and can enhance the squad without hurting their budget.

"In January it's difficult but our recruitment guys are working very hard to try to identify the type of player that can come in. Last January we got Daniel Sturridge for the money we brought him in for, the same as Wilfried Bony went to Swansea, and he has been brilliant," Rodgers said.

"There are players out there but you've got to dig deeper to get them in and sometimes they might not be household names but they could have the quality. When Daniel came in there were big question marks and he's answered those questions. Probably a lot of people had never heard of Coutinho but you can see he's a top young player. That's the challenge for us and the reality of where we are. There will be players that want to come but they'll maybe want Champions League football. We can't worry about it, we just need to find players that can make the difference for us," he added.
