Overview

Hosts Malaysia started their campaign on a positive note by thrashing defending champions Pakistan 4-2 on 20 October. Coach Stephen van Huizen at the start of the tournament felt that the hosts could reach the semi-finals of the event considering the potential at their disposal and they lived up to their billing putting on an impressive display.

It was not all plain sailing for Malaysia though as their defence looked shaky at times, something which the team-management would need to work immediately. Malaysia are the favourites coming into this clash and are expected to cruise to victory.

Their opponents China and come into the tournament as a lesser known entity with their last appearance at an International event coming at the Asian Games where they finished in fifth place.

The Chinese did have an decent outing at the last Asian Men's Hockey Championship tournament in 2013 finishing in fourth place and will look to better that at Malaysia.

Despite their improvement over the years, it is unlikely that they will beat an in form Malaysia on Friday.
