The 68<sup>th Cannes Film Festival opened in spectacular style, with wall-to-wall A-list stars providing the glamour with which the world renowned film festival is synonymous.

Leading the way in the sartorial stakes was British actress Sienna Miller. The blonde beauty was joined by fellow jury members Sophie Marceau, Xavier Dolan, Rokia Traore and Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, as well as jury presidents Ethan and Joel Coen, on the red carpet for the premiere of the opening night film La Tete Haute (Standing Tall). Starring Catherine Deneuve and Benoît Magimel, the movie centres on a young delinquent as he comes of age.

The 33-year-old actress wore an elegant midnight blue dress as she took to the red carpet at the Grand Theatre Lumière, Palais des Festivals.

Earlier she was spotted giggling with fellow judge Jake Gyllenhaal at the official juror's photo call and the two revealed they had forged a new friendship as they walked the red carpet together.

The opening night saw stars such as Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Natalie Portman, Lupita N'yongo and model Karlie Kloss raising the fashion stakes, each wearing gowns more sensational than the last.

Julianne, 54, defied her years in a classic shimmering, black gown, with a plunging netted sequin wrap over and lavish embellishments.

The Still Alice Oscar winner, who is at the film festival in her role as a L'Oreal Paris ambassador, exuded old world Hollywood glamour with her hair swept to the side and her dress matched with emerald green jewellery.

Australian star Naomi Watts looked stunning in a striking silver-grey dress with a stone embroidered bodice, a full, feather-covered skirt and pockets. The 46-year-old dared to bare in the backless dress which also had a plunging neckline.

Her latest film Sea Of Trees is competing for the coveted Palme d'Or top prize at the festival. Gus Van Sant's tale of survival shot in Massachusetts and Japan film, also stars Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe.

Black Swan star Natalie Portman wore a classic column-shaped strapless red gown. Looking stylish in the understated gown, the 33-year-old Oscar winner took to the red carpet with her husband, choreographer Benjamin Millepied.

Lupita Nyong'o made a dramatic entrance in a jade Gucci chiffon plisse gown with a cape detail. The dress featured an embellished floral detail of embroidered crystals and hand painted pink and blush silk flowers.

Also making a bold statement was Chinese actress Fan Bingbong, wearing a delicate gown with embroidered flowers.

Showcasing her new red locks, Bollywood star Katrina Kaif made her Cannes red carpet debut as a L'Oreal ambassador in a black strapless dress with lace detail and a flattering full skirt with flower embellishments. The actress took the opportunity to pose for a selfie with Julianne Moore.

Opening night was an undisputed triumph with the stars from East and West setting a whole new standard on the Riviera, promising yet another year of glamour in Cannes.
