Noah Wyle stars as Tom Mason in Falling Skies TNT

Falling Skies season 5 returned with the ultimate battle for Earth looming, and Tom Mason at the centre of events.

The premiere episode titled Find Your Warrior, found resistance leader Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) hallucinating about his wife in the bedroom of their Boston home, which was destroyed ages ago. However, it remains to be seen if the Espheni or someone/something else is responsible for Tom's visions.

Following Tom's return to Earth after an extra terrestrial space encounter, he shoots the Espheni overlord right in the head, proving that Noah Wyle's character is far from the idealistic bookworm history teacher we meet in season 1.

Wyle also teased a "dark" Tom Mason in the show's final season.

"There is a darker turn to the character for sure this year, but it was inevitable," Wyle told Yahoo! TV.

"Now that humans have the tactical advantage for the first time, he's going to have to help people tap into their more aggressive, more base selves. Instead of being the kind of quarterback who lifts his team to a victory, he's going to kick his team down the field to victory," he added.

One of the highlights of the opening episode of season 5 is Tom Mason's powerful speech about finding your warrior to win the war. He asks everyone to get mad, as he declares it is the time to "overkill"

The Mason family is also torn apart because of the love triangle that has developed involving Hal, Ben and Maggie. Hal (Drew Roy) still cannot accept that his girlfriend Maggie (Sarah Carter) has conflicting feelings for his younger brother Ben (Connor Jessup), and this leads to stress among all three in the season 5 premiere episode.

Episode 2 is titled Hunger Pains, where a surprise attack leaves the 2nd Mass group with no food.

According to the official synopsis, "A surprise skitter attack leaves the 2nd Mass without food. In desperation, Maggie, Ben, Pope, and Sara go on a dangerous mission hoping to find supplies. Along the way, they encounter a family deeply scarred by the Espheni plan. Maggie must make false promises to insure the 2nd Masses' survival."

Meanwhile, Tom and Anne discover that the Espheni have created something part Espheni, part Skitter, part Hornet and part human.

Falling Skies season 5 episode 2 airs on 5 July at 10pm on TNT.
