It was a fateful night for the Manchester powerhouse in Basel.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils were effectively eliminated from the Champions League group stage after a 1-2 defeat to FC Basel. Phil Jones' 89-minute finish was not enough to see his side through as Basel were already on a strong wicket. After all, United needed just a draw, not even a win, to progress into the knockout stage.

Trouble started for Fergie when Marco Streller struck on 9 minutes. This forced the Reds to switch to an attack mode, in a desperate bid to level the score. On 84 minutes, United's failure to cut out an inswinging and bouncing cross from Xherdan Shaqiri cost them heavily as Alex Frei managed to head it home at the far post.

In fact, United managed to create plenty of chances but a proper finish evaded them until 89 minutes when Jones finally scored.
