Close on the heels of his dismal show at the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais has sparked a row after posting an image of himself dressed as Adolf Hitler on Twitter.

The fancy dress was performed after one of his followers apparently compared him to the German dictator. The dress he is wearing sports the notorious Nazi symbol. Another image juxtaposed to the same photograph depicts him dressed as Sir Winston Churchill making bunny ears behind Hitler's head. The post reads: "I'm in two minds..."

Another tweet is accompanied by a photograph of Gervais dressed as god, apparently taken from his TV show "Afterlife". It reads: "Thanks so much for all the love for The Invention of Lying. Means a lot. Bless you Twonks..."

Earlier, Gervais, 50, vowed not to take up the role of Golden Globes host ever again. The comedian told the US TV host Conan O'Brien that he was originally planning to appear at the Golden Globes dressed as Hitler. "I was going to get to the podium, let it die down - then go, 'Too much?' Then I wanted to look in the crowd and go, 'It's the wrong crowd, just the wrong crowd'. Then I was going to say, 'That's the last time I borrow a suit from Mel Gibson.' That would've been good, wouldn't it?" he told O'Brien.
