All those One Direction fans who fantasised about running their hands through Harry Styles' hair just had their dreams sheared off. In an Instagram post that is bound to have some of his followers in tears, the singer revealed that he has cut off his long locks.

In the photo, Styles just shows the long pony tail that was snipped off with the caption "Whoops". But don't get too upset. The 22-year-old added the hashtag #Littleprincesstrust to his post to explain that he donated his hair to Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment using donated hair.

Whoops. #Littleprincesstrust

"We are grateful to anyone who decides to do good things for us," the trust stated in a message on its website. "Harry Styles' high profile however helps raise awareness about the charity too.

"He reached out to the Trust because he wanted to support us — what an endorsement from someone so popular!"

We knew that the day Styles cut his hair would be considered a bleak day for most of his fans but what we didn't expect was Twitter to drop straight into depression. Fans from around the world mourned the loss with the hashtag #RIPHarrysHair and are eagerly waiting to find out what new short hairstyle the singer will debut.
