Liverpool are already planning on strengthening their forward options as they look to secure the services of Palermo striker Abel Hernandez in the January transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers significantly strengthened during the summer but has seen his side struggle for goals, with only Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses scoring in the Premier League.

The Reds have scored five goals in five league games but struggled to break down Southampton as they suffered their first loss of the season. Luis Suarez is set to make his long awaited return from suspension against Manchester United in the Capital One Cup but it seems as though Rodgers may feel he needs yet more options in attack.

The Liverpool Echo reports that the Merseyside club are optimistic that they will be able to sign Hernandez for as little as £4m in the January transfer window.

Hernandez has scored four goals in his three league games this season as Palermo look to gain promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

The 23 year old has an impressive record for Uruguay having scored seven goals in his 10 appearances, but he has struggled to gain regular opportunities with Luis Suarez, Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani preferred in attack.

However, Hernandez's friendship with Suarez could help Liverpool in their pursuit of the striker who was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the course of the summer.

With Arsenal having failed to complete a deal it seems Liverpool will attempt to make their move in January as Rodgers will be keen to make sure he has the necessary firepower to compete for a place in the top four.

While Suarez and Sturridge have proven their quality in the Premier League, summer signing Iago Aspas has thus far struggled to adapt, while Fabio Borini will spend the remainder of the season on-loan at Sunderland.
