Manchester United are close to securing a deal with Anderlecht for Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrović in the summer, according to Tutto Mercato Web.

Louis van Gaal is preparing a massive splash in the summer to rekindle United's credentials as title challengers, having all but secured a place in the Champions League this season.

The Dutchman has therefore earmarked a lot of players whom he can consider in the summer for a possible title push and Mitrovic has emerged as a prime candidate to fill the void left by the imminent departure of Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian has failed to live up to expectations at United and is likely to be shipped back to Monaco, from where he is currently on loan. Robin van Persie is also another prospective casualty in the summer, with the Dutchman struck with a series of injuries this season, bringing back memories of his injury ravaged career at Arsenal.

The Dutchman's failure to score from the spot against West Bromwich Albion in the weekend did little to help his cause, as the Red Devils were dealt a third straight defeat in the league, as they look to beat Liverpool for a top four finish.

Juventus and AC Milan are also reported to have been interested in the striker, but United have swooped in ahead of the Italian duo to complete a deal.

Van Gaal has also set his eyes on a potential transfer for Memphis Depay to add more pace to his attack but his prime concern for the summer remains the transfer of Gareth Bale, who has been linked with a £100m move back to the Premier League.

They will however have to fend off interest from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, who are also interested but United remain the team best placed to beat the FFP trap and sign the forward, who will add both pace and goals to their attack.
