Manchester United chief scout Peter Braund was scouting FC Basel's Breel Embolo and Fiorentina's Borja Valero during their 2-2 Europa League draw at St Jakob-Park on 26 November. Both players are on Louis van Gaal's radar as he looks to bolster his squad.

The Cameroonian-born Swiss striker's was promoted to Basel's first team in March 2014 and since then has bagged 26 goals. His impressive run has not gone unnoticed as he was called for the national side after he pledged his allegiance to Switzerland in December 2014.

Embolo made his international debut earlier in March and scored his first goal for Switzerland during their 7-0 victory over San Marino in October. According to Swiss German-language newspaper Blick, the Red Devils sent their chief scout to monitor Embolo, who has been in fine form for Urs Fischer's side.

United already have Anthony Martial on their books after the France international arrived from AS Monaco in the summer. He has had a good start to his Old Trafford career and is a regular inclusion in the 20-time English champions' starting lineup.

Van Gaal will be hoping he can bring in another teenager to bolster his attacking division, especially after allowing James Wilson to join Brighton and Hove Albion until the end of the season.

Any move from United will see them face competition from other European clubs. Treble winners Barcelona and Wolfsburg are also interested in securing Embolo's services and the Bundesliga club's sporting director Klaus Allofs revealed the German club were working towards signing the striker.

"We are on the way, working economically. A good deal is progressing," Allofs was as saying by Bild.

Braund also watched Valero, who had a disappointing spell in the Premier League between 2008 and 2011 with West Bromwich Albion. The Telegraph reports Southampton are also in the mix to land the Spain international and provide United competition.
