A man who identified himself as Michael claimed that nick Cannon needed jewellery for wife Mariah Carey.

Nick Cannon has been unwittingly involved in a jewellery heist.

A man stole thousands of dollars in jewels from the Fred Segal apparel store in Santa Monica by posing as the America's Got Talent host's assistant.

According to TMZ.com, the thief identified himself as Michael when he called the store and claimed that he worked for Cannon. The man apparently told staff that he needed some jewellery for his wife Mariah Carey urgently.

The celebrity site reports an employee was sent to meet "Cannon's assistant" at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, but was met by another man posing as the star's security guard on her arrival.

He is said to have indicated he would take the goods up to Cannon's room and return with cash in order to avoid paying taxes.

The jewellery changed hands and that was the last she saw of the man.

Although the specific value of the stolen merchandise has not been made public, it is believed to be significant; a pair of trousers from the high-end retailer costs upwards of $300.

The LAPD are now on the hunt for the robber and his accomplice.

Cannon has not commented on the robbery.
