Downing Street has released a statement, saying that the Prime Minister David Cameron has spoken with Barack Obama over the phone on the threat of Syria's chemical weapons. This follows Mr Obama's broadcast a few days ago where he stated categorically that should there be a threat or use of the weapons then the US 'will revisit their approach'.

The two men also spoke with the French President Francois Hollande on how to build on the support already given to the opposition to end the appalling violence in Syria and bring about stability". The leaders said they hoped a meeting of opposition groups in Cairo would show "real unity of purpose and coherence in working towards transition".
