More than 100,000 passengers in over 40 stations used the London Underground Wi-Fi network during its first month.

Wi-Fi London Underground
We can't wait to read your 'tweeting on the tube' tweets.

Provided by Virgin Media, the free Wi-Fi networks can be accessed from more than 40 stations, allowing passengers to tweet, update their Facebook profile, listen to music over Spotify and check for transport delays for free.

In a single week the service delivered more than one million tweets, Facebook posts, emails and web pages, as commuters told everyone who cared to listen that they were waiting for a train.

"Tweeting from the tube, too weird!!!!" said one excited Underground user, while another observed that "Tweeting on tube Wi-Fi is like Mission: Impossible. 'You will lose your signal in 10'."

While perhaps little more than a novelty, given that Wi-Fi access isn't available in the train tunnels, the wireless networks will stretch from 40 to 120 of London's 240 tube stations by the end of the year.

Throughout the 2012 Games, passengers will be able to check TfL travel pages for live journey information as well as Time Out, Spotify and MyMovies.Net for free from station platforms.

But by the end of the summer, only Virgin Media customers will get full internet access for free, everyone else will have to make do with a basic news portal and transport information, unless they want to pay.

We're not convinced that we really need to tweet and 'Like' statuses while waiting two minutes for a train and, as one user summed up: "Tweeting from free WiFi in the tube. If my teenage self could see me now... He'd ask why do you need to do that? And he'd be right."
