Overview

The Champions League has eight groups with each consisting of four clubs. Each team will face the other twice and after six matches in the group stages, the top two teams make it to the next round of the competition.

Manchester United failed to qualify for the knockout stages as they finished third in the group behind Wolfsburg and PSV Eindhoven. Louis van Gaal's side have been demoted to the Europa League as other teams from England including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City have progressed to the next round.

Clubs from the same association would not face each other, while winners will take on the runners up of the group stages. The winners will be placed in one pot, while the other pot will consist of clubs who finished second in the group stages.

The first leg of the round of 16 will be held on 16-17 and 23-24 February 2016 and the return leg matches will be played on 8-9 and 15-16 March.

The quarter-final draw will be held on 18 March, while the semi-final draw will be on 15 April as top European teams compete for a place in the final at San Siro, Milan on 28 May. Click here to find out seedings, possible opponents and key dates of this season's Champions League.
