Van Der Sar Warns United Fans to Expect Trophyless Run

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has suggested that supporters should get used to the idea that the club may not compete for major trophies in the next two seasons.

It was also going to be a difficult task for David Moyes to recreate the success the club enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson and the former Everton manager has endured a difficult start to his career at Old Trafford.

United have already lost three league games this season, with the shock home loss to West Bromwich Albion causing some to question Moyes' team selection.

However, Van der Sar believes that a dip in form was inevitable and that Manchester United fans should be prepared to give Moyes time as even Ferguson had to wait four years before landing his first trophy - the FA Cup in 1990.

"The players are still the same but you need to make adjustments to the style of play. They had a good win at Sunderland but of course, you don't expect to lose at West Brom at home, those were expensive points," the former Holland goalkeeper told Talksport.

"Even last year they had a bad start but Robin van Persie, with all the goals scored, was on fire and hopefully this year they can do it again. Traditionally Man United never have a great start and at the moment the change of manager is quite difficult for them.

"They've had so much success over the years with Ferguson so it's normal to have a dip and even Ferguson did not win the league all the time. So there's a chance you don't win anything in the first season or even the second season but hopefully there's faith in what he can do."

Manchester United have placed plenty of faith in Moyes and the Scot is sure to receive plenty of time in which to build his own side that can compete not only domestically, but in Europe as well.

Despite Van der Sar's stark warning, the 42 year old believes the club are still contenders for the Premier League title this season because they have a good blend of youth and experience.

"Of course they are realistic contenders because they have great players with a lot of experience," added Van der Sar.

"They have a lot of young players coming through because United are a team that give young players a chance. Maybe a little later than clubs like Ajax, but there is always a chance for the likes of Danny Welbeck, Jonny Evans, Rafael."
