Robbie Rogers's late equaliser helped the USA to a 1-1 draw with Mexico on Wednesday, in Jurgen Klinsmann's first game in charge.

Oribe Peralta put Mexico ahead in the 17th minute before Rogers converted Brek Shea's cross after the midfielder found room down the inside-left channel.

But Klinsmann's tenure as the US national manager started with a stark warning to his squad.

The German removed the player's names from the back of team shirts and allocated the numbers 1-11 for the starting XI and 12-18 for the substitutes, saying that he wanted his players to remember that representing their country was more important than personal vanity.

"It was a special moment," Klinsmann said of his USA debut. "It was a special moment before the game, listening to the anthem and feeling the energy from the stadium and the players."
