The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delivered aid to the town of Balangkayan in Eastern Samar province on Wednesday (November 20) as officials admitted aid had been slow to get to some of the areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

Trucks carrying rice and other food were unloaded in the town and locals queued for aid packages for their families.

Aid has been slow to reach some of the worst-hit areas.

"Unfortunately we were quite late but nevertheless we are around supporting the population affected by the Typhoon Haiyan and so slowly, slowly we are reaching the different affected population in the different areas," said ICRC official Albert Madrazo as he oversaw the distribution of the aid.

The Philippines and international armed forces and aid agencies are struggling to get help to devastated areas due to the extent of the destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan.

Typhoon Haiyan smashed into the central Philippines on Nov. 8, laying waste to just about everything in its path, killing more than 4,000 people and leaving four million displaced.
