Juliana Marins Volcano Tragedy: Brazilian Family Threatens Legal Action After 'Negligent' Rescue on Mount Rinjani
The rescue agency head admitted they faced challenges.

Juliana Marins, a 26‑year‑old Brazilian dancer and adventurer, tragically died after falling into the crater of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano in Indonesia. The incident has shocked many—especially her family and friends—who now accuse the rescue team of negligence, arguing that their daughter might still be alive if help had arrived sooner.
On Saturday 21 June 2025, Juliana Marins decided to go on a group trek up Mount Rinjani, which is Indonesia's second-highest mountain. Unfortunately, she accidentally fell 1,600 ft, as per the Mirror.
She survived the fall but became trapped in the steep, treacherous terrain. Drone footage captured her movements and cries for help over the following days.
The world was shocked after seeing videos captured by a drone showing her horrifying situation. According to BBC, rescuers even reported hearing her screams for help after the fall. Rescue teams—including Basarnas (Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency)—raced to the site. Thick fog, unstable terrain and high altitude repeatedly delayed operations
Juliana Marins Died Four Days After Falling
Unfortunately, her family confirmed her death on 24 June 2025. They said: 'With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.'
'We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received,' added the family.
One of the trekkers in the group said that the terrain was really slippery. The poor visibility up the mountain made it even harder to climb.
Juliana Marins' Family Blames Rescuers for Her Death
Juliana Marins' family claimed that their daughter would have been saved if the rescue team just arrived on time and acted promptly with their search efforts.
'Juliana suffered great negligence on the part of the rescue team,' said the family after Juliana's body was retrieved on Wednesday 25 June 2025. They added that if rescuers had reached the Brazilian tourist within 7 hours after the fall, Juliana might have been saved.
'Juliana deserved much more! Now we are going to seek justice for her, because that is what she deserves! Don't give up on Juliana!' the Marins family further stated, which suggests that they could push for legal action.
But, they were still grateful for the efforts of the volunteers who helped retrieve her body from the crater.
Indonesia Rescue Agency Admitted Facing Difficulties
Indonesian rescue agency head Mohammad Syafiti confirmed a meeting with the tourist's family. He said that their rescue efforts were delayed due to numerous challenges, such as the thick fog that disrupted their thermal drone from locating Juliana.
Syafiti said that they initially planned to use a helicopter to rescue Juliana Marins. However, they had to scratch this initiative due to bad weather conditions. He added 'So, we had to evacuate the victim on stretchers, which took quite a long time.'
Indah Dhamayanti Putri, the deputy governor of West Nusa Tenggara province, said that the body was transported to the neighbouring island of Bali. She added that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the main cause of Juliana's death and the time she died.
